Erin Martysz Thies: Coach and Owner, Cf-L1, Certified Birthfit Coach

Hi, I’m Erin. I hold a Level 1 coaching certification from Crossfit (CF-L1) and more recently received my Birthfit coaching certification. I believe we all have untapped strength, and I want to help you find it.

In a completely a roundabout journey, I never dreamed of raising a family OR a life in fitness. I dreamed of the concert hall stage and I didn’t want anything getting in the way of that. An accomplished orchestral musician performing for over two decades with two core ensembles in West TX and a host of others as a sought after extra player, I found myself working to improve stage presence through adult ballet classes and was told by the instructor that I “wasn’t very strong and needed to try this ‘crazy workout’ that would help.”

Those words changed my life. I walked into a crossfit gym at the age of 33 and discovered, 1) I loved it, 2) I was totally confused for the first six months, and 3) I wasn’t actually very strong at that point, touche, ballet instructor.

As I became less confused and yes, got stronger, I started to notice the people around me, especially the women. They were just incredible to me, showing up each morning and doing the work before many of them went home to get the day started for themselves and their families. They had this one hour to give to themselves and be badasses, and I saw at once how this time and focus on their fitness allowed them to show up healthier, happier, and more whole in their professions and for the people they loved.

Functional strength and fitness has impacted every aspect of my life. I no longer have chronic aches and pains that once plagued me. My partner realized how much fun I was having and decided to check things out, and now he is healthier and fitter than he was twenty years ago. Strength training set us both up on our fertility journey, allowing us to weather loss, pregnancy, the birth of our Daughter and then our Son, and thrive as new parents in our 40s. It has even allowed me greater skill and stamina to play my instruments, my OG life pursuit.

I thought that if I ever did have children, I didn’t want to stop “being me.” I wanted my child to experience life with me, not set mine aside for the child’s. I didn’t want to give up the things I loved, but I also wanted to be present for my child, not sitting on the sidelines because I “couldn’t do” something with them. And I started to realize I wanted that for other women, that so many of us become so wrapped up in living for others that we forget to live for ourselves first. We deserve so much more! As musicians, we build note by note over a long time; we start by making rudimentary sounds and refine them over many years into unforgettable melodies and rhythms, and it’s not that far off from building strength. It turns out my life on stage led me to this place all along.

Now, with two growing wee ones and a burning desire to help others live their best lives, I welcome you to Brith&Beyond Fitness, a training center focused in functional strength practices so you can find your own badassery and show up for yourself as well as everything and everyone important to you.
